When it comes to movies, I'm one of those guys with very few demands. Is the movie entertaining despite anything resembling the depth of the Marianas Trench? If yes, then I'll probably watch, and enjoy it. For proof, you have to look no further than the vast majority of summer blockbuster films. Most of them look fancy, but they really are of very little substance (like the DeLorean DMC 12, flashy to look at, but not much else; unless it has some serious upgrades, like a flux capacitor).
This does not mean that I don't appreciate the masterpieces when I see them. For me, there are really three movies that stand atop the list of "the Greatest E-V-A-R." While this is not a list for everyone, these are mine. I'm basing this list on the movies that, when, once started, I can watch beginning to end every time I see them.
These are in no particular order:
1) The Princess Bride
Why? If you're asking that question, you've obviously never seen the movie. To quote the Grandfather, "Are you kidding? Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles..." I will be the first to admit that I'm a hopeless romantic and The Princess Bride is one of the greatest, not to mention one of the funniest, romance movies ever created.
2) Beauty and the Beast
I'm here referring to the Disney version, and I'm already noticing a pattern. Not that I'm really trying to hide it, at all. Why is this one here? See the aforementioned statement about hopeless romanticism, combine it with some of the best animation in Disney's history, and add in a dash of Gaston, and voila! you have your answer.
3) The Lion in Winter
Ok, so this one doesn't quite follow from the other two. Oh well. The 1968 version starred Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn and follows the story of Henry II and his Christmas Court at Chinon in 1183. What follows is a movie that would make almost any family look better in comparison. It also has some of the greatest lines in cinema history.
This author does very little justice to these movies with the above blurbs. I highly recommend these three movies to anyone; even if you've seen them already. They are great movies.
There are many that are very close to those three, such as The Man Who Would be King and Ever After, but they are not quite at the same level. Oh well.
